Recent homeworks for Mr Lawrence

Due tomorrow (Wednesday 13th) is a piece of writing around one side in your exercise book on the following:

"Discuss advantages and disadvantages of generating electricity using nuclear fission and nuclear fusion."

This means that you need to give both sides of two different technologies. Probably the biggest drawback of nuclear fusion as a source of energy is that nobody has got this to work yet... The question is, should we be investing large sums of money in trying to make it work, when we could stick to the nuclear power stations we have already, which use nuclear fission.

Due last week were answers to these questions:

Our previous homework was to produce, in the form of a poster or leaflet, a guide to the dangers and safety precautions associated with working with radioactive sources. This should include information about the different dangers of alpha, beta and gamma sources.

Physics trip opportunity

We have been given an exciting opportunity to take a group of students to a talk about The Higgs Boson at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.  This event takes place on Friday 7^thDecember.  It will begin at 1.30am and we should be back in school by 4.00pm. It is entitled “The Higgs Boson: a weight off all our minds” and is given by Dr William Murray – from STFC and CERN.  It is open to Y11 and there are only 14 places, so it is first come first served.

Please collect a letter from Ms Hamnett and return to the school shop

I'm not well enough for school today - my voice didn't survive yesterday.

The aims of today's lesson is to get you familiar with some online resources, to revise some of your earlier physics and biology work so it stays fresh in your minds and to move forward with respiration. What you don't finish in the lesson will be your homework for next Tuesday - please record in your planner.

Well done to those of you who completed the self-assessment assignments I set you on kerboodle recently - I have recorded your marks and will talk to you about these. If you haven't done these, find them by clicking on the 'Science (Additional) GCSE for AQA' link at the top left after you log in, then on 'completed and overdue work'. There is some new work on Kerboodle relating to respiration too.

Sunflower is another online resource which you now have individual logins for. Your username should be the same as your kerboodle one - it's surnameforename with no space, all lower case e.g. alexandercameron. Your password is the same but with your tutor group's letter and number e.g. a01 for Austin 1 (no spaces again - e.g. alexandercamerona01). The school code is chen08. There are assignments set for you here too, on cells and photosynthesis.

Homework - review of Generating Electricity topic

Our recent Physics Progress Test revealed that the topic we covered back in November / December, when I was ill for a number of lessons and before we embarked on our ISAs, has faded from many of your meories.
